Full Moon Karaoke and Variety Show announces the release of Somewhere Safe, a limited-edition risograph chapbook, featuring photos and writing by Sheboygan-based Hmong artist M Chang.

The book documents the people, spaces, and emotional turmoil Chang has experienced over the past year. Chang’s images, of her family and her daily life, frame rather than explicitly describe her intimacy with the subjects; the moments always remain her own.

It would be easy to talk about the duality of the images, the starkness of light and shadow, soft moments of grief, but there’s a something-elseness to the contrasts in the book, something out of reach. This dreamy but composed quality, in what otherwise might resemble a casual snapshot, gives Chang’s work its energy.

The photos have the grittiness of images by Japanese photographers Takuma Nakahira and Daido Moriyama but with the romance and style of a contemporary K-drama. Somewhere Safe highlights the artist’s unique ability to capture soft and tender moments fiercely.

Founded in 2015, Full Moon Karaoke and Variety Show combines karaoke and performance art. From 2015–2020, the show was held monthly on the night of the full moon at Company Brewing in Milwaukee, WI. Revived in 2023, the series continues to experiment with new venues and formats, and has expanded to include a publishing component. Somewhere Safe is the second title in this project.

On September 13, please join us at Toy’s Restaurant for karaoke, drinks, and snacks as we celebrate the release of Somewhere Safe. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

Somewhere Safe was printed in Milwaukee, WI by Sara Caron. The book and reception were made possible with funding from the Open Fund, with support from the Andy Warhol Foundation. This event is free and open to the public.
